In February, 2006 Michael Resnick, Ph.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health and Director of Research in the Division of Adolescent Health and Medicine at the University of Minnesota spoke to a gathering of concerned Suburban Ramsey County citizens.
In his speech, he talked about both the impact we have on others and the impact they have on us. He shared a story about how Charles Schultz, creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip, once posed these six statements to a group:
- Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
- Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
- Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
- Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
- Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor or actress.
- Name the last ten years’ worth of World Series winners.
He then asked, “How’d you do?” Most people can't come up with names, despite the fact that these are some of the most accomplished people in the world.
Schultz (and Resnick) then shared another quiz:
- List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
- Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
- Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
- Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
- Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you because what they did really mattered.
- Think of 2 or 3 times when people joined together, raised their voices, and made a real difference for others around them.
Most of us can name the people in each of these categories—everyday people who are making miracles for the people whose lives they touch. How are the Children? through our Kids Matter effort, wants to engage everyday people—like you—to make miracles for Suburban Ramsey County kids. Please join us!
